Yellow Fest
Blake Island
April 2-4, 2010
Our first cruising event on the water in 2010! The annual Yellow Fest Cruise was a roaring success – and not just because the wind was roaring for much of the weekend. A dozen boats braved the small craft advisory and a hail shower to make their way to Blake Island. Piko even made the trip over on Friday in the midst of a howling gale. After all that hard work we were ready to party and Sam and Dave put on an excellent event as usual.
The affair began with the traditional bottle hunt. Over 150 small bottles were “hidden” along a line of trees between the pavilion and the beach. The competition was fierce and two of us tied for the most number of bottles found – 16 – one of the guests aboard Piko and Chris Powell. Several people scored other prizes by finding yellow boxes and a silver and a gold egg. Serenite won for best decorations with a long cheerful ribbon of yellow mesh tied fully around the life lines with narrower yellow ribbons and a festive “SBYC Yellow Fest” banner across the stern. Congrats Nancy!
For the rest of the evening we retreated to the pavilion for BBQ, libations, lots of desserts and the strains of a guitar trio wafting over the blazing fire and dozens of conversations. The weather cleared and calmed for a bit giving us a crystal clear view of the Seattle skyline. And then too soon it was closing time and the friendly but insistent park volunteer bade us all to call it a night and mind the thieving raccoons.
On Sunday, we were rewarded with a sunny breakfast-time to go with the little Jelly Belly Easter treats that mysteriously appeared on deck in the middle of the night. And then slightly before noon, with the forecast threatening another advisory the event broke up and we came flying home with white caps on our starboard quarter.
Thanks again to Sam and Dave for carrying on this wonderful tradition.
